Photovoltaic system / Vodacom head office Midrand (DES's first solar power project)
Diesel Electric services recently secured a project to supply and install 55kW of solar power onto a "carbon Neutral" building at the Vodacom Head Office in Midrand. The project entailed placing the panels on a flat roof. These were self ballasting. They were placed in position, cabled up to a concentrator box and then to inverters which convert the DC power from the panels to 400VAC and the output of these inverters were connected back to the building electrical system. The power from the inverters then supplements power required by the building during sun hours.

Spotlight on Tanzania Breweries
This is Diesel Electric Services first medium speed genset. The unit is rated at 2.8MW, 11kV Base load rating. This is the biggest single output genset that Diesel Electric Services has ever put together. Not only is the engine, alternator and base frame huge and extremely heavy, the system is run on a remote dry cooling system and is started via an air starting system.
The project duration was 3 months. The system was designed at 11kV as an Automatic Mains Failure system with excess power being fed back into the TANESCO grid. The quoted fuel consumption figures for the GE 16V228 Genset at the full rated load based on ISO 3046 is 187.5 g/kWh(e) Another advantage of the GE Engine is the lubricating oil consumption in comparison to an equivalent high speed engine the consumption is substantially lower on the GE engine. The GE engine offered is also used in locomotive and marine applications.

Sanral Toll Installation
This project comprised of 3 x 1650kVA Prime Rated Diesel Generating Sets @ 0.8PF.
Mitsubishi S16R-PTA engines were utilized coupled to Leroy Somer alternators. The gensets are Prime Rated at site conditions (1 700.a.s.l. and 35 degrees Celsius) and produce 1650kVA, with a 10% overload available for one hour in twelve.
The genset control and synchronizing panels were upgraded to a 2 500A system. The fuel system comprised of 1 x 30 000 litre underground bulk tank, 3 x 1 000 litre day tanks. Galvanized mild steel sound attenuation was utilized for the inlet and outlet restricting the noise level to 65dBA @ 7 meters.
2 500 Amp single core flex cable was utilized from the alternators to the LV Panel (for three gensets)

Sanral Rivonia and Central operations UPS project
Rivonia – 6 x Apc in row cooling units DX were installed. 2 x 300kVA UPS's
Central Operations Centre – 10 x Apc in row cooling units DX were installed. 3 x 500kVA UPS's.
The main reason for using precision cooling (in-row cooling), was that they have high density servers demanding high power and therefore more cooling would be required to maintain the server room at a constant operating temperature. Hot isle containment was employed to trap the hot air in the hot isle and prevent the hot air from mixing with the rest of the cold air in the data centre. This improved the efficiency of the in – row cooling unit, therefore saving the client costs on his electricity bill.

Multichoice Installation
Multichoice, the leading multichannel digital satellite television provider/operator across the African continent, has built a new 500sq meter Data Centre at their premises in Randburg.
Data Centre's are becoming stressed by increased capacity requirements and the higher density of IT equipment, consolidation and virtualization, Multichoice required a new Data Centre solution that could meet its growing IT requirements.

Recent Nelson Mandela Generator Installation
This Nelson Mandela installation comprised of 3 x 2000kVA step up generators with 11kVA switchgear to supply the main grid with power should the Eskom mains fail. The installation for Liberty Life at Nelson Mandela Square is the first in the history of Diesel Electric service that a generator installation is suspended from the building columns where the generators are hanging in the air. The generators were positioned on cradles that were supported by droppers and bolted to a steel structure suspended and bolted to the columns of the building. Bracing was bolted on the floor and connected to the steel structure to prevent the frame from moving when the generator starts up.

Recent Eastgate Generator Installation
This generator plantroom consists of 12 x 1850kVA Mitsubishi engines with step-up transformers to 6600V. Diesel Electric Services did the change-over between mains and Genset on the HT side and also the Synch to the mains. The plant room also comprises of a 83 000L bulk tank feeding two 23 000L day tanks. A scada system was installed for monitoring purposes.

We are currently installing 16 x 1650kVA Rotary UPS and 16 x 800kVA diesel alternator sets together with distribution at a data centre in Midrand, and fitting out a DR Centre for Bank Serve in Randburg with 2 x 500kVA gensets and 2 x 200kVA static UPS'S with distribution.
We have also just completed an Energy Centre for TFMC in Cape Town which included 4 x 1700kVA Rotary UPS, MV switchgear and transformers and 2 x 2500kVA diesel gensets, 12 static switches and all associated cabling and distribution.

In computer centres such as Standard Bank River Club, we are solely responsible for all power cabling requirements, from Main Frame power down to supply of small power for security cameras on an ongoing basis.
Absa's choice of installing 4 x 2.9 MW natural gas powered generating sets in the new "Towers West" complex is the first of its kind in the financial sector in the R.S.A. The installation to be supplied, installed and maintained by Diesel Electric Services is expandable to 8 units operating in parallel, amounting to a future total output of 23 MW. The GE – Jenbacher gas generator sets chosen by Absa produce less than half the carbon dioxide per kWh than the coal fired power stations predominately providing our country with electricity. In addition, waste heat recovery from the gas generators will be used for heating and cooling of the new and adjacent complexes using specialized conversion processes, further enhancing the reduction of CO 2. The gas power generation and heat recovery station is designed to operate in parallel with City Power to reduce the demand of the Absa Towers Complex during peak periods, as well as provide standby power during power outages, while allowing ABSA to contribute to the global policy of energy efficiency and reduced emissions.

British American Tobacco Company
7 x 1 850kVA Diesel Generating sets. All seven sets generate 400v stepped up via 7 x transformers to 11 000 volts.

Proudly associated with the Sedibeng Brewery Project
This Standby Diesel Generating plant consists of 3 x Perkins Bi-Fuel 1700kVA and 2 x MTU diesel 2500kVA generating sets. All five sets generate 400V stepped up via 5 x step up transformers to 11kV. The five sets are then synchronized on a 11kV Switchgear Busbar. The changeover between standby and local utility power is then done via 11kV switchgear in a remote substation.
